FutureNEST Visit to Cammell Laird

FutureNEST Members were fortunate enough to visit Cammell Laird’s Dockyard in Birkenhead, Liverpool last week.

The day started with a tour of the 90 acre site, including 4 dry docks, the 14998 m² modular construction hall and its supporting fabrication facilities. The tour provided a unique insight into ship fabrication and maintenance operations, allowing the young professionals to further understand the challenges faced during through life support to major Royal Naval platforms.

In the afternoon, a wargaming workshop was set up, facilitated by the FutureNEST board. The theme of the workshop focused on Project CABOT, and saw the groups of FutureNESTers commanding Type 26 Frigates in responding to a range of hypothetical operation and emergency scenarios. This generated discussion on Combat System operation, Marine engineering solutions and an appreciation for the operator in real time responses. The teams worked against the clock in understanding incoming information and providing a suitable course of action, which was then interrogated by the FutureNEST board. The format of the workshop has allowed the board to lay out foundations for the upcoming Visioneering25 campaign, generating excitement within the FutureNEST cohort.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to Cammell Laird for facilitating the visit, and hope to return again in the future!
